This necklace was created with the theme of "Oceans Treasures" and I have called it "Loreley" after the poem of the same name:
"There sits a lovely maiden
Above so wondrous fair,
With shining jewels laden,
She combs her golden hair.
It falls through her comb in a shower,
And over the valley rings
A song of mysterious power
That lovely maiden sings.
The boatman in his small skiff
Is seized by a turbulent love,
No longer he marks where the cliff is,
He looks to the mountain above.
I think the waves must fling him
Against the reefs nearby,
And that did with her singing
The lovely Loreley."
I have used paua (abalone), Malachite and a glass pebble, all embellished with Delica seed beads, as the focal points. A "fishing net" of Amazonite, cream and peacock freshwater pearls, paua pieces and Amethyst chips links two of the focals together visually. On the other side, a ladder of freshwater pearl sticks and more round peacock pearls join paua and Malachite visually.
Seven clear glass droplets on the top of the Malachite focal symbolise the Seven Seas.
One single purple Sugalite rondelle provides a centrepoint and burst of colour and is topped with Swarovski crystals.
Micro-faceted Amazonite beads peek out here and there.
The spiral-woven necklace has a sterling silver lobster clasp closure. This work of art is backed with Ultrasuede and all edges have been finished beautifully (as you can see by the pics below).
Handstitched by me over many hours.
The entire piece was inspired by a walk along the beach with my children, and a discussion that followed about mermaids with my 10 year old daughter :-)
